Hello everybody,
Numerous players requested that I change over Mike's face tutorial into pictures tutorial with a superior clarification on the grounds that many players prefer tutorials with pictures and a good clarification so I chose to convert it into a photos tutorial with a decent clarification and furthermore demonstrating how you can make your own hair for your model, good luck.
All steps we will be following:
1. Open the texture file of the model you are retexturing on photoshop.
2. Get a new face for your model.
3. Open the face you downloaded on photoshop and crop it.
4. Place the new face in the texture file and position the face correctly to make it fit.
5. Adjust the new face to match it with the model.
6. UVW Map it to make it fit even more and make it realistic.
1. Open the texture file of the model you are retexturing on photoshop:
I'm not going to explain much about how to get the texture file of the model and etc because this tutorial is for face retexturing only and not for importing and exporting so you will need to export the texture on txd workshop to png or tga (Preferably tga) and then open it on the photoshop.
As you see, I opened the texture file on photoshop, let's move to step 2.
2. Get a new face for your model:
You can find shitloads of face textures by searching for 'face textures' on google images, you will get a lot of faces that you can use for your model or you can simply get one of anybody but I highly recommend sticking to the face textures first.
You will find a lot of faces like this one
Now we have got a new face for our model, let's now move to step 3.
3. Open the face you downloaded on photoshop and crop it:
Before placing the face on our model, we will need to open it seperately and make some changes first. After opening it on photoshop, crop it and keep only the eyes, mouth and nose. You actually have the two sides of the face so you are wondering which side to keep and which one to remove, you will keep the side your model's texture file uses. Here's an example;
So I'll be taking only this from the face texture I downloaded for my model.
As you see in the picture above, the face on my texture file is the one in
Done, I cropped the only needed part of the face texture.
Now we are good, save it and let's now move to step four.
4. Place the new face in the texture file on photoshop and position it properly to make it fit:
Let's now place the part we cropped on our default texture. After saving the crop you applied on the face texture, open the texture file again on photoshop and go to file > place.
It will now be like this after placing it
Now you will need to position it properly to make it match the eyes, nose and mouth of the texture file, you can use the hard light for that, I personally use it to position the face correctly.
Once you position it correctly like this http://prntscr.com/hsisdg
Press ENTER to place the face and now you have successfully placed the face Make sure you removed the hard light and set it back to normal before you do anything else http://prntscr.com/hsiz9k
let's now move to step five.
5. Adjust the face properties to make it fit:
High possibility that the new face you are using doesn't match the color of the model's skin which makes it look bad (Don't be racist :D Two skin colors on the same person? Pattern lives matter? strange).
To do that, we will be adjusting the following properties and make it fit as much as possible, let's go. First you will need to rasterize the layer which contains the face texture. Right click on the layer and select rasterize layer http://prntscr.com/hsiusq Once you rasterize the layer, click on it and goto Image > Adjustments > Match colors http://prntscr.com/hsivby
Once that's done, you will get this
http://prntscr.com/hsivx2
You will find source and layer in buttom, they look like this http://prntscr.com/hsiwjv The source should be the model's texture file, I'm editing MAF_BOSS texture file so it's called maf_boss in the source. http://prntscr.com/hsixc4
Then you gonna edit the layer to 'background' http://prntscr.com/hsixjl
Now you are gonna edit Luminance, Color intensity and fade http://prntscr.com/hsixqi
Keep playing with those three image options I stated above (Luminance, Color intensity and fade) until you get the closer result you can get. (A very close color that looks like the skin color, doesn't have to be 100% the same but the closer you can get the better your face will be) That's the best I could get to be honest http://prntscr.com/hsj24y but don't worry, we are going to do two more things to match the colors.
Now let's select the face layer and adjust the 'fill' and 'capacity' until we get a better result.http://prntscr.com/hsj2tu
That's the best I could get after playing with fill and capacity, till now we have very good results. http://prntscr.com/hsj3ke
Let's now zoom in like that http://prntscr.com/hsj41p and select the Smudge Tool from here http://prntscr.com/hsj4h4
The Smudge Tool. The smudge tool is used to smear paint on your canvas. The effect is much like finger painting. You can use the smudge tool by clicking on the smudge icon and clicking on the canvas and while holding the mouse button down, dragging in the direction you want to smudge. We will use it like the pen tool to make the edges of the face match the texture file. Lemme show you an example of what the smudge tool does.
I holded the left click on mouse from the ear to the hair so we will be doing the same to the edges of the face we placed on the texture to match the colors. (Don't do what I did to the ear, just showing u an example lol -.-)
And this is what I managed to make with the mudge tool, I managed to make the edges of the face we placed match with the texture.
We're now good, now save as tga and move to step six.
6. UVW Map it on 3ds max to make it even more fit and make it realistic.
So after saving the texture file on photoshop, open 3ds max, import the dff to 3ds max and import the new texture we edited on photoshop.
Now after placing the texture on my model on 3ds max, I got this hsjhx2 You will most likely get a weird face after importing it to your model but if your face is good then you don't have to follow step 6.
If your face looks weird like mine, open editable mesh, use element and select the face. prntscr.com/hsjiw6 then select UVW Unwrap and press on edit http://prntscr.com/hskt5s http://prntscr.com/hsjt37 and now select the vertices surrounding the eyes, don't touch anything else unless you know what you are doing but for now select the vertices surrounding the eyes. http://prntscr.com/hsjtlf
Like that http://prntscr.com/hsjtsw
The red ones are the ones I selected and now keep moving them slowly around and keep rendering with SHIFT + Q until you get a good face. This is the best I managed to get http://prntscr.com/hsju8y
Then simply right click on UVW Unwrap and collapse to to save the changes http://prntscr.com/hsjusb
You can do better with practice and time, don't expect to make the best faces from the first time, second time or even third time. You might fail many times aswell but you will get good results soon and maybe now, who knows? Also make sure that you look for a face that will fit your model's face, not any face.
Now the tutorial is over and I hope I helped you with this tutorial and make sure to let me know if you got any questions and so on.
