Saints Row

I made this thread on another forum so I'm just copy & pasting it here.

Saints Row 1: Rarely ever mentioned, mainly because it was an Xbox Exclusive title, but still a really good game and a fun one too. It was unique and you'd know if you've played it. It had what basically a lot of people liked from GTA: SA, a good (gang related) story with amazing graphics (for it's time). Personally my most favorite from the series.

Saints Row 2: Pretty much everyone's favorite Saints Row game, it had everything fun that GTA IV didn't have, I remember SR2 vs. GTA IV beef. Man, those were the days. Like SR1 this game had a balance between realism and wackiness. Something GTA 4 left behind as Rockstar decided to go for an ultra realistic game, which made SR2 more fun and more enjoyable. And the story from SR2 was and still is the best from the entire series.

Saints Row The Third: I don't know what the fuck happened with the writers on this one but the story was wack. However that doesn't mean the game wasn't fun. Believe me this was very enjoyable and gave me a good 12 hours or so before finishing the game and left me with nothing to do. The map was very shallow and empty, not to mention that it was 2x smaller than Stillwater (SR1-2 map). Along with all of that the competitive multiplayer was removed. Huge let down.

Saints Row IV: I think at this point they were tired of being called a "GTA Clone" and decided to do something different. Which in my personal opinion (or most would agree) this was a horrible idea. But nonetheless the game wasn't bad. It was fun and very hilarious, they also gave some nostalgic moments for the old school fans which was pretty cool. Not my Saints Row though.

Saints Row GOOH: To keep it short and simple; it was meant to bring back the old school fans by bringing back an old ass character by the name of Dex. I won't spoil anything but it sucked, not the game, the actual way they brought the character. The game itself was good, again not what most old school fans wanted but it wasn't too bad.

Okay, so that was a quick rundown of my opinions of all of the Saints Row games, I've played all of them and I consider myself an old school fan. I still dream for a new oldschool type Saints Row game I fell in love with so many years ago. But seeing Voltion's previous game series I doubt it'll ever happen. So has anyone here played a Saints Row game before? If so which was it and which one's your favorite? And what's your opinions on the franchise?

soz for my grammar :/

SR1 and SR2 was the good ones, the other shit is total garbage. Would love to see some old school SR1/SR2 themed ones again, but I doubt that'll happen. Also, SR2 might still be free-to-play on Steam, if I'm not wrong.

I played the shit out of SR1 and SR2, I did finish SR3, but stopped because of what you said above. SR3 was a fucking wack job.

I think my fav part about SR2 and 1 was the music too. Saints Row was the reason I fell in love with hip hop.

SR1 was the best SR. I miss PTP and all the A tapping.

Too bad they went for a more Coop base multiplayer later on :(

After Saints Row 2 the game turned to shit. Saints Row 3 and 4 were both a joke, nothing like the original roots of the game. Like cmon, fighting aliens in space and shit? wtf were they thinking.

SR2 was hands down the best. All the activities were fun(except for escort, fuck escort), the main storyline was great, even if you'd finished story there was still a lot to do(unlike SR1/3) and also had an actual multiplayer played by people unlike 1(and let's be honest, whored mode was crap).

Btw, I miss Troy and Lin :(

Literally my favourite thing about SR2:

They changed their game engines and apparently they're entire style of creating games when SR3 came out. When it came out, of course like everyone else I loved it but even though I'm relatively young in the Old School SR community, I still preferred SR1. The graphics weren't the best but they were adequate for the time. I hate to say this old cliche, but the writers should pull the old "It-Was-A-Trippy-Dream." card. Maybe the boss took a hit of some bad Loa Dust (Designer drug from SR2 in case you're lost.) and started tripping. Also the game engine needs to be changed because the graphics, even though, modern could be much, much better. SR2 had a drastic and rewarding change to their graphic design, which most fans appreciated. But afterwards, everything looked bland and kind of the same after a while. They're wasn't a lot of thought into the missions. If you pay attention, they're pretty repetitive and the ones that don't repeat themselves are too goofy to take serious. I don't know what the process to writing the missions and storyline was for the franchise, but I think the gang-banging aspect in SR1 and SR2 was lost horribly. It may be like @King Enemy said and Volition got tired of the GTA Clone comments. If we're being real, it's like comparing Battlefield to Call Of Duty. You can have you're own opinion about that comparison. Honestly, Volition needs to take it back to Saints Row 2 days, re-vamp it, get the story back together and give us another hit which likely won't happen because they've gone quiet since 2015 when GOOH was released with no signs of creating any new games. All in all, It's a lost dream and we won't get another Saints Row 2. Sorry for this essay but I get kind of into these sort of topics.

If Saints Row were to ever go back to it's old roots it would be through a reboot, it's better IMO as the story is already too confusing as it is. A fresh restart wouldn't be too bad, honestly. My ideal Saints Row reboot would take place around the crack epidemic in the US (70's/80's or 90's) and it would follow the storyline on how the Saint's formed, since it's a reboot, most if not all the characters from the original SR won't appear, and if they do they probably wouldn't have the same roles they previously did (Gat would be a cop in this). Stilwater will make a return, just because I love it, there'd be new gangs (plus the Saints ofc) to explore and learn about, the world would be dynamic as well. Each faction (gangs) would be different and creative but realistic enough for this new reboot universe and it's time era, ideally there'd be four factions that you'd be able to either ally with or be enemies with, being allies with other factions should be optional but there'd be great perks for doing so. Your character would be fully customizable and layered clothing is ofc a must. New fresh activities to keep the game fun and enjoyable for hours on end, especially when you finish the actual story. Ofc the game wouldn't be too serious, I don't want it to be a crime simulator game, it would have some wackiness now and then and references to pop culture from the time era it's based on, yada yada yada.

These are just what I got from the top of my head, I wrote more about it on some Saints Row forum called Saints Row Underground.
