Fire and house insurance?

I came up with this quick idea of fire and house insurance and I need opinions.

The main goal is to give the FD a better roleplay experience.

- Fire

So a random fire would be generated somewhere in SF, maybe hourly only IF FD are on duty and the fire could be anywhere, a house, a business, bush fires etc and the fire department get called out and can extinguish the fire also introducing ladder scripts

- House Insurance

By the 1/2000 chance your house catches fire, a house insurance can be added which will cover furniture. For the length of time the fire is burning it starts to tear through the furniture you have placed and if you don't have insurance you've lost it, if you do have insurance then they will be automatically replaced after making the claim

Don't shoot me down for this idea, give me more suggestions

I like the ideas, especially the Fire suggestion.

As for house insurance, a player has to pay the house insurance each 20 in-game hours (Like monthly). I guess players should lose the ownership of their house if they dont have house insurance + money to cover the damages.

not sure about hourly but I fw this idea.

only reason I don't agree w it being hourly is bc sometimes roleplay lasts more than an hour, and if there's only 3 FD members online things can be problematic if another fire generates while they're mid rp. Although that's an easy fix, maybe add a cooldown instead of hourly generations?

Maybe I can detect if a fire is already in progress and not call it if one is still in progress

The fire suggestion sounds good. It would add more role play for the fire department. It would need multiple locations scripted and appropriate times, so it doesn’t become repetitive. Every hour (if enough staff on duty) would become too repetitive maybe.

The insurance system sounds like a nuisance to be honest. I can imagine it’ll annoy players to log-in and see their furniture gone because a fire happened, then they have to furnish it again. Or they can pay a fee which just adds more bureaucracy and useless fees to pay (players don’t care about paying fees and taxes). And if this house fire scenario can happen very very very rarely, I don’t know if it’s worth spending time scripting it.

so it would be manually generated by admins?

No automatic I don't think you understood what I ment, the script won't call one if there's already a fire in progress

I said insurance will automatically recreate the furniture they lost so they don't have to furnish it themselves

Anyone else got input on this?

I like this idea a lot. Not only does it provide meaningful roleplay to the fire department {which other servers previously have never managed to achieve), it provides an incentive for players to manage their money better if they've got a constant commitment each paycheck/week/month. It's no different to paying X amount of tax each paycheck, just another hit to your finances but with good reason.

I think however if there are no FD online, then the script should recognise this and not create a random fire.

I don't think it should be automatically generated. I understand the concept and where you want it to go, I just think it should be manually generated by an admin etc.

Scripted role-play just seems to restrict them from creating role-play for themselves. If they're bored, then they need to be creative and I don't think setting off random house fires would create anything, it'll just be NPC'ed. It's a good concept, as long as it is controlled by admins and not a script.

Then again, Damian did a house script where alarms would go off when a house was being robbed, but that was due to actual players robbing a house. Setting off house fires due to NPC's just wouldn't improve role-play experience imo.

Every hour seems too much as well, especially with the current size of the server. Maybe in the future when the fire department grows, you could implement something like this. I don't see it working at the moment though.

Maybe this concept would work:

- 5 + FD Members on Duty.

- Admin generates a fire at *SPECIFIC LOCATION*

- Notification comes through to FD *House Alarm @ Ocean Flats*

- FD responds, rp commences, fire is put out etc....

I don't really like the insurance concept though.

I'm personally not a fan of it being at any set time however. The idea that there's a scripted time as to when fires go blazing only diminishes the surprise factor of a fire occurring. For example, say fires are an hourly occurrence — it's 18:00, a fire begins to blaze in Garcia, the player base will then know that the next fire will be at 19:00, and the cycle continues.

I think it's a little boring in this sense, and doesn't really have that randomness or surprise factor to it. It just sorta happens every hour, and at some point you're going to be the unlucky one, it's almost inevitable. It's the same for whether it was 2, 3, or 4 hours between each fire, it'll be on a scripted timer which is kind of bland and will devalue that quick adaptation in RP if you expect it to happen.

Personally I'd rather see complete randomness to fires occurring - anytime, anywhere. Implement the ability to purchase insurance for your home so that should your house set on fire you can make a claim. Once the claim is successfully completed, your furnished interior goes back to the way it was before the fire.

Only if there's 1/10000 possibility of this happening and if that can only happen when the owner of the house is IG.

This system is a mixed bag for me. On one hand I can see it really being good as a form of roleplay for FD, but there are precautions and certain things that should go into place.

I completely agree with what Lei said here. A set time would take the surprise factor away and virtually make it pretty common place. It should be super random. Maybe come up with different fire schedules every week?

Also I really think that, if the house that's on fire belongs to a player, notes should be taken down / the script should note that that house has been fucked with already. I agree with what Lei said at first, that it's no different from paychecks being bumped up a bit. That's all fair game. But to penalize a player more then once a week wouldn't be sound or realistic in the slightest I think. It'd screw up immersion.

All in all though. Implement it right? It'l be really cool.

I also think this would be a good guideline to run by.

Last Edit: I also think that if this is implemented, it should pave way for Arson Investigators. FD should probably get involved in that. It'd give the system the most bang for it's buck.

I think it should only be allowed to be triggered by a high-ranked FD member whenever they deem it's appropriate. Very rarely should houses randomly catch fire, and should only catch fire if they're not up to the standards of fire prevention, it would create RP for FD to do home fire inspections each year on every house etc. Each hour would be too much, and you also have to consider they don't handle just fire incidents. They should be rare so FD doesn't get tired of dealing with fires all the time.

I believe it should also be easier to roleplay your own house being on fire, possibly scripting each property to have their fire particle spots so that it makes it visually pleasing and encourages FD/fire roleplay overall, which can spread to surrounding houses if not attended quickly. It could be permitted by an admin who's in-game who deems whether FD is available so it doesn't get abused and actually creates roleplay on all sides.

I had exactly this in mind, I believe that a member of Command Staff should be able to use a command like /generatefire or something on those means which then creates a script, and generates a random fire at a location you stated in the original post. I do like a good fire script but like said numerous times hourly can be a pain in the butt, and although I don't live in America, i'm not too sure how common fires are in San Francisco in general or in California for that matter.

With the insurance thing, I believe a member of either the Governments Fire Marshal Office or the SFFD's Fire Inspection Division should be able to do a /createclaim command and this would allow the owner of the home to make a claim if they obviously have insurance. I do like the suggestion and I see how this would help the FD out if we get bored etc... it could use a few tweaks but I think you nailed it generally along with the comments above.

There was an hourly fire system on an old roleplay server I used to play on, it got to the point where there was just casual fires and people drove by them like nothing was happening. Insurance system is kinda cool but eh, I don't really know. I'd much prefer if fires were more of an IC thing rather than a script wise thing.

Bospy (Premium Member) ·

Taking my old suggestion, ey? The fires shouldn't be able to spread beyond a certain radius and shouldn't spread to other buildings, but an admin command should exist to start fires in certain places. In this way, at 12AM a random fire doesn't engulf the entirety of San Fierro. I'd like to suggest also setting up "hotspots" in places like the forest so there can be wild fires.
