In regards to the video I've seen in this thread.. wouldn't it be better if the person on the other side of the call's RP name is not shown during the phone conversation? Something like:
Calling..
Call picked up.
Unknown: Hello?
You: Omae wa mou shindeiru.
You hanged up the call.
The contact's name will change if and only if the contact is saved in the mobile phone.
It's good in theory, but it sounds a bit like it would overcomplicate things.
a.) They said you'll be able to save only 5 numbers for now.
b.) Which name would be shown once it's saved? The real firstname lastname or the the contact name you save the number under?
c.) What if someone changes their number?
d.) How will you role play recognizing someone's voice?
e.) What if you don't want to have people's numbers saved on your phone e.g a criminal might not want someone to see his contacts on the phone.
f.) What if someone you have met in-game calls you and even though their voices are different, acts like he's the other person you met?
Curious because all the servers I played on just did the same thing as when you talked to someone in person - they showed the firstname lastname in the chat/nametag. Then it was up to the players to make the connection and use relevant names for introductions. This suggestion saves a chance to metagame some things, but at the same time adds a lot of unnecessary clicks and extra steps.
On the one hand I can see the advantage, I think it would be fair to hide the name of the caller to prevent metagaming. I'll even add that, from what I've gathered, when creating a character, you have to specify the sex and age; therefore to make use of this information, and if this suggestion is forwarded, I think that depending on the answers to those two "Unknown" should be replaced with whatever sex and age range of the character who's talking to you on the phone. For instance it should say "A young male says" rather than "Unknown" for male characters who are in the age range of 16 to 21, etc. At the very least specify the gender of the person who's talking because this would be easily recognizable.
However, as Simeon mentioned, with this you would never be sure who's calling you, even though in real-life you would've very easily been able to recognize the voices of people you know and have met when they're calling you. Therefore I think it should be left as is, and it should be up to the player to decide what to do with the information. Metagaming is already against the rules, and implementing this would create issues.
Alternatively, there could be a way to use a command when on the phone that hides your name and replaces it with the gender/age range thing I mentioned earlier, if you really don't want people to metagame you, similar to the /mask feature on LS-RP but with more details. This depends on whether a feature similar to LS-RP's /mask will be introduced on BA-RP. I'm not a fan of the idea of a scripted voice changer feature but if it comes to that then this is also a possibility.
@Neaksy had a neat idea. However, if you don't know another player, there's a good chance they know they don't know you either. So, whatever information you obtain by knowing their name is pretty much metagaming; obviously your player wouldn't just know another player's full name through the phone-call unless told otherwise.
Supporting this suggestion. They can make a few small changes in this phone-system script. Just instead [FirstName_LastName] They can add this string "Unknown voice" unless it is a contact in your phone.
You can recognize a voice even if you dont have them in your contacts? For example a friend that you dont have saved?
I’ve seen a similar phone system in another server but I forgot how it worked. If you dont want them to know you even OOC just use a mask, not supporting for now unless tweaks are made.
Pretty fair with what some of you have mentioned in regards to recognizing the voice of the call receiver. Currently, the whole phone system is simplified with the end purpose left up to both the caller/receiver's intentions. It's pretty dangerous, but I do agree that it's much better for now to leave it up to the players' thoughts and intention, rather than implementing a system that locks down a player's capability to interpret things as seen fit, especially in a "heavy roleplay" type server like BA:RP. Implementing this suggestion would only exaggerate things, wherein loopholes and unnecessary Non-RP elements would take part in the whole concept. I'll pretty much let this suggestion die on its own now, thanks for your opinion.
I'm sorta out of touch with seeing the boundary between the real world and a roleplay-type virtual world in SA:MP, wherein only certain real life elements would work as it should in SA:MP with few modifications that suit the alterations done in SA:MP from within its core (text-only for communication with other unknown players). It will take a while for me to get used to the boundary, but then again thank you everyone for showing me things from your perspective. :)
