American measurements

We're in America. Please use / enforce miles, MPH instead of KPH, and maybe sync the time to actual California time.

Aizec (Member) ·

I may be wrong but I think most of our playerbase so far is European. (And also the rest of samp's playerbase)

Most people will be confused by the american measurements, so it's just better to use the ones that pretty much the rest of the world is using.

As for the actual Californian time, I don't think this is such an important thing, the time is in-game anyway. Whenever IRL it's the same at this exact moment is not really relevant.

Speed limit signs are all in mph

Whiskey (Member) ·

Changing the game time is a terrible idea as our targeted audience isn't just players from the US.

Logic (Member) ·

Measurements should definitely be implemented as American measurements. If you're European and you know it, well then good. If you don't, then you'll have something to adapt to and learn, which definitely won't hurt. The time doesn't really matter, but I'd love for it to be Cali's time because I'm in Cali. xD

Aizec (Member) ·

IMO it's the americans that should adapt to the rest of the world. Nobody wants to stop in the middle of the roleplay to google how much that one thing is or what is the other.

Why is it? Not like it will affect them anyhow.
If it's based on say GMT+0 now then people playing during their own time zones across the world would have morning/early day or such.

I don't see any issues with it even if it's changed.

It's a roleplay based in America. I think it's only fair to use American things in-character, as no one here stops and says "Golly, the centre is 100 metres away from me, lad."

What you're saying is that we should change the timezone to London time because most roleplayers are British, right? That's true, but can you explain how it being day in game when its night in England changes anything? I don't even think the time matters. Bars and what not open when they open. I've never really seen any proof that it matters.

Do you endorse people in-character using measurements and words not used by the average American? To me, that seems awfully out-of-character. People who aren't even from North America play Mexicans and South Americans, and use terms that are unfamiliar to their culture and language, but still adapt. Why is it any different? If you're playing a character from America, it would make sense to use American terminology that is incredibly standard. No one here uses meter or kilometer, and if they did they'd be laughed at.

KillaWabz (Member) ·

People barely use measurements in SAMP anyway, the only thing thats used is MPH.

cBull (Member) ·

I want American measurements to be used, because I'm from the United States. Maybe a script can be implemented that translates the MPHs to whatever? (ex: /ms , /metric). Syncing the time to California's time would be cool, too.

Assuming most of the players will be based in Europe (CET,  +1 utc), changing time zones for "realism" is irrelevant.

What are the benefits of changing the gamemode timezone to CST, which is 8-9(?) hours behind CET?

If our playerbase is overwhelmingly populated with people from the US, then of course it will be considered to change the timezone to suit them, as they would be the targeted audience. It has absolutely nothing to do with character development or realism.

I support that vehicle metres should show km/h but the timezone thing is totally different and hopefully you understand that.

California is on Pacific time not Central

My 2c: I don't care what time zone the server is in. A real-time progression of time (one hour in game is actually one hour) would be nice.

Speedometer at least needs an *option* of Mph snice all of the several hundred signs are in Mph

Mile markers could be used but would be boring and much harder to specify where you are since the map is only 12 or 14 square miles (each edge would subsequently be 3-3.5 miles)

Someone mentioned above that they don't want to Google how long a mile is or something. Americans are the same way. This thread shouldnt turn into an argument for/against using either system in the real world. Reminds me of Kathleen Madigan's bit on it: “The rest of the world is just smarter than us, remember when we tried to start using the metric system in the U.S….they said we were changing in a week, and then Thursday came and no test, no nothing. We just kinda forgot."

JackH (Member) ·

Why is there even an argument? Just change it to MPH and other American measurements. It's for the sake of immersion. If where we were role playing took place in Europe, I'd want European measurements. It's not a matter of "Americans should adapt to us". Shut up, lol.

Aizec (Member) ·

"Shut up, lol." is a great argument there mate.

Take it like this, do you think that if the server were to speak other language rather than english, it would be a problem with the immersion?

Do you think that if we were to roleplay in Moscow instead of (a fictional remake of) San Francisco, California, it would be a problem with the immersion because we speak english (the most spoken language in the world, wink wink.) or use other measurements? I am not endorsing anyone or anything, I am basically saying that... The only countries using the imperial system rather than the metric one are: Myanmar, Liberia and the US of course. While the rest of the world uses metric, it is by far a better and more welcoming system to use to most of the players around the world. (Not just Europeans.)

We should have the system that is most familiar with most of the people from everywhere, not just the USA.

JackH (Member) ·

I'm not trying to argue, "mate".

We're role playing in America, Walter Hawk. They should use American units. How would it make sense for your character on the server to say "We're going 30 Kilometers per hour"? It wouldn't, because your character is American, I'm assuming. And even if he isn't American, nobody else would realistically be able to understand, because KPH isn't taught in the United States. Your petty grievances of "The USA should catch up" are nothing short of pedantic and xenophobic, so yes, shut up.

Gotta say I agree. It'd really turn me off if I saw this lmao.

Conspiracy (Member) ·

I say we go ahead and make our own damn measurement units! /s

Nah but for real, this is too much of a touchy subject, even if it makes complete IC sense for us to use the American system. Me personally, I don't care about what our time and measurements are, I'd be fine with either of them. Honestly though, I imagine there are more important things out there that need to be addressed before any of this trivial matter becomes worthy of mention, and I mean no offense by this.

Just let the owner and main developers decide on their own, that's how it's always been in SA-MP.

tw1ster (Member) ·

The speed limit signs in the server are in MPH, which isn't very complicated to follow. Aside from that there's not many other measurements that'll be utilized in game. As far as the weather/time cycle, we can't please everyone and sync it perfectly to what is outside of your windows in real life. I personally wouldn't mind it being synced to California time, but that's unfair for the mass amount of European/western players we have and are going to have. Players would log on around "peak time" in GMT +0 for example and it would be dark/early morning.

How is it unfair?

As an European who finds American measurement units to be dumb as hell, I'm all in for using them. Matter of fact, I'll take it a step further by saying that it only makes sense to use American measurements. The playground is pretty much US-ish and so is most of the in character documentation and paperwork (e.g. PD/FD structures, licensing, etc). So yeaah, ya'll should get used to the units, it ain't space science, really.

As for the time? I don't see why not, or why would people whine against it to be honest.
As an EU with the server time being @Cali you get to play @ evening/night IC mostly.
Ain't that the best time woorah for nightlife

At the end of it all though I don't particulary care what the server timezone is gonna be
